The University of Tsukuba attempts to create transdisciplinary fields based on high level of expertise in each academic discipline, and will deliver the results of advanced research activities to the world. Also, as a core of "Tsukuba Science City”, the university collaborates with other research institutes and industry to bring about innovation and give back to the society.
Here, we would like to introduce some of the most advanced research projects in the University of Tsukuba.
■International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (IIIS)
The mission of IIIS is to be a multidisciplinary, international hub for the research to elucidate the fundamental mechanism of sleep/wakefulness, to develop strategies to regulate sleep, and to contribute to the enhancement of world health through combating sleep disorders and associated diseases.
■Algae Biomass and Energy System R&D Center (ABES)
Microalgae consists of variety of functions and active ingredients which are applicable to every field. For industrial applications of algae research, ABES intends to promote to develop an algae-based biofuel production system, an algae-based wastewater treatment system, the production of livestock feed from algae, and the application of algae-derived oil for cosmetics and medical products.
■Proton Medical Research Center (PMRC)
Proton therapy is a type of radiation therapy which is recognized as an advanced medical treatment. PMRC conducts fundamental research in order to establish more effective and safer proton therapy. The center is also working toward practical use of the boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) as a next-generation cancer therapy, in which neutron beam radiation selectively destroys cancer cells.
■Center for Cybernics Research
As the world's leading innovation center, the Center for Cybernics Research will develop the future for people and society by applying "Cybernics" (interdisciplinary and fusional field of human research, robotics and information engineering), and realize a positive cycle of innovation by simultaneously promoting the following: the creation of innovative cybernics technology to solve our country's social problems, the creation of new industries in the medical, welfare, nursing-care and life-related field, and human resource development.
